Adopted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in 2006, the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) is an international agreement that establishes decent working and living conditions for all seafarers worldwide.
The MLC influences the current practice for the employment of seafarers, the working and living conditions onboard, ship-owner’s liability, seafarers’ complaints and Port State control action. With the MLC, governments and ship owners should be committed to establishing decent working and living conditions for seafarers. And most importantly, control and enforcement mechanisms should be in place to ensure there is fair and equal treatment of all seafarers.

This course aims to familiarize ashore personnel with the contents of the MLC 2006 and their responsibilities to ensure compliance.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
1. Describe the background, general provisions and contents of the Titles of MLC 2006.
2. Recognize the responsibilities of ship-owners, ship management companies and recruitment agencies.
3. Identify the issues arising from the implementation of the Convention and ways to overcome them.
