Pollution Response online course. The aim of the course is to raise awareness on pollution response management and to motivate the shipboard personnel to develop their skills and understanding of the tasks related to a pollution emergency incident, as per MARPOL Annex I (Regulations for the “Prevention of Pollution by Oil”).
Good prevention initiatives can go a long way in reducing the risk of pollution from ships. However, in spite of best efforts, spills will inevitably occur. When this happens, it is necessary to ensure that effective preparedness measures are in place that will ensure a timely and coordinated response to limit the adverse consequences of pollution incidents involving oil and hazardous and noxious substances.
Topics covered:
- Comprehend the historical background of pollution response through the most important International Conventions on pollution management.
- Identify the regulatory background of pollution management and more specifically learn the contents of MARPOL 73/78 regarding pollution response.

- Identify the contents of the Shipboard Marine Pollution Emergency Plan (SMPEP) and of the Vessel Response Plan (VRP).
